‘Short Circuit’ Remake Being Developed Yet Again

short circuit remake new

Short Circuit, the 1986 comedy featuring robot Johnny 5, is getting a remake – with a Latin-American/Hispanic-American take. Spyglass Media Group is developing the remake, with Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman tapped to handle the script. In the original movie, an experimental military robot is struck by lightning and gains a human-like intelligence.

Hey kids, do you remember Short Circuit? It was a sci-fi comedy from 1986 that featured lovable robot Johnny 5 and actor Fisher Stevens in brownface. It was a hit and even spawned a sequel. And now, it’s getting a remake. Variety reports that Spyglass Media is developing a Short Circuit remake and that writers Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman to bring Latin-American/Hispanic-American elements to the story. Cisneros and Shuman’s credits include the screenplay for the upcoming comedy Half Brothers, which is set to arrive in December.

In the original Short Circuit, “When one of an experimental range of military robots is hit by lightning, it is given consciousness. It escapes from the military and befriends a young woman, Stephanie Speck. Its creator, Newton Crosby, is desperate to find it, or his entire project may be scrapped.” Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, and G. W. Bailey, starred, with Tim Blaney as the voice of the robot, who was officially named Number 5 but eventually given the nickname Johnny 5. Saturday Night Fever director John Badham helmed the film.

This isn’t the first time talk of a Short Circuit sequel has surfaced. Back in 2008, Dimension Films scored the rights to the material and planned a remake, with Robot Chicken writer Dan Milano handling the script. In 2009, Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr signed on to direct the project. But Carr eventually left the project, and by 2012, it was announced that Tim Hill (Hop) was writing and directing a remake that was going to age down the main character into a pre-teen. Needless to say, none of these remakes made it passed the drawing board.

Project X Entertainment’s James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak will produce this new attempt at a remake, with Rehab Entertainment’s John W. Hyde, who executive produced the original film, serving as executive producer along with Terissa Kelton. This isn’t the only remake/reboot on the docket for Spyglass and Project X – they’re also handling the new Scream movie, which is currently in production.

Do people still care about Short Circuit? Is it the type of property audiences are itching for? I really don’t know. I can’t remember the last time I even heard someone bring it up. But hey, maybe there’s an entire world of Short Circuit enthusiasts out there just waiting for this news.

‘American Horror Story’ Season 10 Poster Arrives With ‘American Horror Stories’ Details

american horror story season 10 poster

Sooner or later we need to have a serious discussion about how we, as a society, allowed American Horror Story to last for 10 seasons. Not only that, but the show will now have its own spin-off – American Horror Stories. Ahead of the premieres of both shows, creator Ryan Murphy has revealed a fang-filled new American Horror Story season 10 poster along with American Horror Stories details.

Behold! The poster for American Horror Story season 10! At first glance I thought this was something involving dentistry, what with the teeth and all. But no, it’s just a very fangy person getting their tongue tattooed. What can this tell us about the new season? I have no idea. Is it about teeth? Is it about tattoo artists? Is it about Ryan Murphy laughing all the way to the bank as he unleashes more glitzy, campy mediocrity upon us? We’ll see! Murphy previously posted a teaser poster that featured some hands clutching a cliff overlooking some water, with the caption “Things are beginning to wash up on shore.”

Series regular Sarah Paulson is back for season 10, because of course she is. Other returning cast members include Evan PetersKathy BatesBillie Lourd, Finn WittrockLily RabeLeslie GrossmanAdina Porter, and Angelica Ross. Creator Ryan Murphy shared that new poster you see above, and he also shared this poster for the spin-off series American Horror Stories.

We knew the spin-off series was going to feature standalone, self-contained episodes. With the new poster, Murphy also added: “We are doing 16 one hour stand-alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends and lore…many of these episodes will feature AHS stars you know and love. More to follow…”

Look, I know people love this show, but I want to counter that with this: maybe they don’t? It just seems to me that every time a new American Horror Story season rolls around, fans get excited. Then the season starts, and by the third or fourth episode, everyone seems to be in agreement that what they’re watching is actually kind of awful. And yet…they keep coming back for more. It’s a strange phenomenon and one day I hope scientists study it so I can understand just what the hell is going on here.

Anyway, American Horror Story season 10 will arrive on FX in 2021. As for American Horror Stories, there’s no concrete date for that yet, but you can expect to find it on FX as well, at some point.

Hear an Exclusive From the ‘Ammonite’ Soundtrack

ammonite soundtrack

Ammonite hits select theaters this week, and in honor of the new period romance drama, we’re debuting an exclusive from the soundtrack. The score comes from composers Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann, who also handled the music for the 2016 film Lion. Milan Records will release the Ammonite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on Friday, November 13. Hear the exclusive track below.

Ammonite Soundtrack

In AmmoniteFrancis Lee directs Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan in a drama set in the 1840s. Winslet plays “self-taught paleontologist Mary Anning, who works alone on the wild and brutal Southern English coastline of Lyme Regis in the 1840s. The days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now hunts for common fossils to sell to rich tourists to support herself and her ailing widowed mother. When one such tourist, Roderick Murchison, arrives in Lyme on the first leg of a European tour, he entrusts Mary with the care of his young wife Charlotte (Ronan), who is recuperating from a personal tragedy. Mary, whose life is a daily struggle on the poverty line, cannot afford to turn him down but, proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, she clashes with her unwanted guest. They are two women from utterly different worlds. Yet despite the chasm between their social spheres and personalities, Mary and Charlotte discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realization that they are not alone. It is the beginning of a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both lives irrevocably.”

The music for Ammonite comes from Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann, who worked together on Lion. Regarding their Ammonite score, the duo released the following statement (which you can pretend they said aloud in unison if you want):

“Writing music for Ammonite was a smooth and natural process. We already knew from director Francis Lee’s previous work this would be a score full of emotion and restraint. Because the film is a period piece, it also meant finding a tone and instrumentation that would work in this world. The overall length of music recorded is somewhat shorter than our other scores; therefore, we used many natural sounds, so when the pieces arrive, it feels meaningful. We decided for a small chamber group of strings and piano as our palette and worked from there. Francis’s original idea was to find a single piece of music playing in parts and come to a full suite at the end. In some ways, this was how we approached it, save for a few moments of score specific to the scene. We found the strong acting that both Kate and Saoirse brought meant we needed to offer space, and try not to overstep. The last piece of music in the film, during the museum scene, represented a full understanding of the emotions that played out between the two characters.”

Ammonite opens in theaters this Friday, November 13. After that, you can look for Ammonite on VOD starting December 4.

‘Mank’: It’s Once Again Time to Point Out David Fincher Shoots Many Takes

david fincher mank takes

You know the drill: anytime there’s a new David Fincher movie we are all required by law to talk about how many takes he shot. Cast members of the film in question come forward and say, “I shot a lot of takes!” We report it. Fincher rolls his eyes. Then we move on, only to revisit the story again whenever Fincher gets around to making another movie. After taking a hiatus from feature films, Fincher is back this year with Mank, and sure enough, stories are starting to trickle in about Fincher and all his damn scene takes.

We’ve been here before. Over the summer, I wrote up a story about Mank cast member Amanda Seyfried claiming that one of her scenes required something like 200 takes and about an entire week to film. “I was part of scenes with tons of people in it and we would do it for an entire week,” Seyfried said. “I can’t tell you how many takes we did, but I would guess 200, maybe I could be wrong and could be way off. Um, I could be underestimating by five days of one scene when I didn’t have one line… ‘You think I can just relax?’ No, because there are probably about nine or 10 different camera angles that had been on me at one point.”

To be clear: there’s a good chance Seyfried is exaggerating a bit. But multiple Fincher takes have become a gold standard at this point. And a new issue of Total Film magazine has more people involved with Mank talking about Fincher and his many, many, many takes. “We did take after take after take after take,” said Charles Dance, who plays William Randolph Hearst in the film. “And [Mank star Gary Oldman] said to David at one point, ‘David, I’ve done this scene a hundred fucking times.’ And Fincher said, ‘Yeah, I know, but this is 101. Reset!'”

In the same issue, Fincher doesn’t deny this. “I’m fairly didactic about, ‘These are the things that the scene needs to accomplish for me, and we will continue to play, to look for ways to underline these ideas that are as subtle as we can make them,'” the director said, adding:

“It’s a hard thing to say to actors, ‘I want a cohesive, great performance in the master [shot].’ And then, ‘I want a cohesive, great performance in the alternate master.’ And then, ‘I want a cohesive, great performance in the over-the-shoulder. And I want a cohesive, great performance in his over-the-shoulder on to you. And I want the singles.’ Because I don’t want to cut a scene based on where you are at personally on Tuesday. I don’t think I could go into the edit room knowing that I was going to have to cut around somebody who didn’t deliver. Part of it is you cast really great people and get the fuck out of the way.”

Fincher has addressed this sort of thing before. “I like the idea that the first three takes, you’re just rehearsing,” he said in an interview back in 2009, and when the interviewer pointed out that Fincher was notorious for his many takes, the filmmaker countered: “This is bullshit. Look, you’re spending $150m, unbelievable amounts of money to ship period vehicles from Illinois down to Louisiana and get them working. There are teams of people making these cars work, all this stuff. So you get there and you’re going to shoot three takes and then go home?”

He also added: “Some [actors] resent it and go, ‘My best stuff was when I had a lot of energy after my mochaccino and now my energy’s gone,’ but a lot of actors work it out in their heads, they figure it out and have an idea of what they’re going to do. I can see that and I like to move past that, to where they’ve forgotten why they came, or who they are. And it is about choreography, where the eye of the audience finds that person and that person is revealed and they come forward and say their line. All those things in concert. So, you spend all that money to get there, so you might as well make sure you got it.”

In other words: Fincher is going to shoot as many damn takes as he wants until he gets exactly what he wants, and in his mind, to do otherwise would be a waste. So it goes. Anyway, Mankwhich is very good – will arrive on Netflix December 4 following a limited theatrical release starting November 13, so soon you’ll be able to see how all those many Fincher takes worked out.

‘Halo’ TV Series Recasts Cortana, Hires Original Voice Actress from the Games

Cortana actress

Assuming Showtime’s television adaptation of Halo ever actually makes it to the small screen (and considering this property’s rocky path through Hollywood, that is not a guarantee), the show will be porting over one of the game’s most famous voices into the world of the series. Halo has hired a new – um, old – well, not old, but a prior – Cortana actress during a recent recasting session. Get the details below.

According to IGN, actress Jen Taylor, who has lent her velvety voice to the artificial intelligence unit Cortana in every single mainline Halo video game, has been hired to once again lend that distinctive voice to the A.I. character in Showtime’s upcoming live-action series. Taylor replaces actress Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show, Ronin), who was previously hired to voice Cortana and portray a live-action character named Dr. Catherine Halsey, who is Cortana’s creator in the Halo universe.

Here’s an interesting detail: IGN reports that “due to scheduling difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, McElhone can no longer complete her work as Cortana – but will continue in the role of Halsey.” Major Hollywood productions like this have the resources to transport voice recording equipment anywhere in the world and capture actors performing remotely, sometimes even having the actors run the equipment themselves. You’d think that a global pandemic, during which many actors are being even more careful about the jobs they take, would make it easier for someone to do voiceover work, not more difficult. But perhaps the scheduling difficulties meant that McElhone had another acting job that has now suddenly sprang back into first position, and she wouldn’t be able to give Cortana her full attention.

In the games, Cortana is essentially a holographic character. As of now, it’s still unclear whether Taylor will do performance capture work so Cortana will look like her, or if she’ll just provide the character with her voice. Previously, Taylor has voiced Cortana and Dr. Catherine Halsey across several games, including Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: Reach, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and the upcoming Halo Infinite, as well as the TV miniseries Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: The Fall of Reach. She also provided the voice for Microsoft’s virtual assistant on Windows devices, which is named Cortana after the Halo character.

Showtime has been working on bringing this game to the small screen for years, describing the show as “an epic 26th-century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant. Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future.” It does not have a premiere date yet.

‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ Trailer: Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan are Star-Crossed Lovers

wild mountain thyme trailer

In Wild Mountain ThymeJohn Patrick Shanley, writer of Moonstruck and more, writes and directs Emily Blunt, Jamie Dornan, Jon Hamm, Dearbhla Molloy, and Christopher Walken in a romantic drama set in Ireland. Does that mean Christopher Walken uses an Irish accent in this movie? You bet your boots it does! The film, described as “an epic love story with soaring lyricism,” is adapted from Shanley’s play Outside Mullingar. Watch the trailer below.

Wild Mountain Thyme Trailer

I’ll confess that Wild Mountain Thyme wasn’t on my radar until just now. I’m not sure if the film’s production just passed me by, or if my brain has been turned to complete mush by the last few weeks. Either way, this is a real movie, with a real trailer! And it looks pretty good. It’s the type of sweeping romantic melodrama that some will no doubt find corny, but that’s okay.

In Wild Mountain Thyme, “Anthony and Rosemary are star-crossed lovers, whose families are caught up in a feud over a hotly contested patch of land that separates their two farms. Anthony (Jamie Dornan) always seems to be out in the fields working, worn down by his father’s constant belittling. But what really stings is his father’s threat to bequeath the family farm to his American cousin Adam. Rosemary (Emily Blunt) at first seems to hold a grudge for having been shamed by Anthony in childhood, but the sparks between them would keep a bonfire blazing through the night. Her mother Aoife strives to unite the families before it is too late. Just when we think Anthony will pluck up the courage to face up to his repressed feelings, cousin Adam (Jon Hamm) steps in with a plan to sweep Rosemary off her feet, romancing her over a magical 24 hours in Manhattan. But true love is never defeated!”

Who would you choose, reader? Jamie Dornan or Jon Hamm? Place your bets. And as I mentioned above, Christopher Walken is in this, and he’s putting on an Irish accent. Sort of. It’s somewhere in between Irish and his own natural Walken accent.

Wild Mountain Thyme comes from writer-director John Patrick Shanley, whose credits include scripts for MoonstruckJoe Versus the Volcano (which he also directed), Doubt, and Congo, among other things. I didn’t know until just right now that the screenwriter of Doubt also wrote Congo, and my brain is kind of broken. In a good way.

Wild Mountain Thyme is set to open December 11, 2020.

‘The Burial’: Jamie Foxx to Star in Amazon Studios Legal Drama

The Burial

Oscar winner Jamie Foxx is heading into another cinematic courtroom.

Foxx, who played a lawyer in the deranged 2009 thriller Law Abiding Citizen, is set to both produce and star in The Burial, an Amazon Studios legal drama about a real-life court case involving the owner of a funeral parlor. Get the details below.

Deadline reports that Foxx will star in The Burial, which is being directed by Maggie Betts (Novitiate) and written by Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright (Quill). The outlet says the film is based on a true story, and describes the plot like this: “After a bankrupt funeral home owner decides to sue a rival businessman over a handshake deal gone wrong, the owner hires a flamboyant attorney to handle the case.”

Oddly, the new report does not mention which role Foxx will be playing. But a previous description of the film from two years ago, back when Nebraska and Election director Alexander Payne was flirting with directing the project, gives us a bit more info to work with. That report indicated that The Burial will be about Willie Gary, a successful Black Southern lawyer who earned the nickname “The Giant Killer” by taking down some significant corporate giants in court cases on behalf of his clients. Gary is hired by Jeremiah O’Keefe, the owner of a small chain of funeral homes who claims he had been swindled by a major funeral parlor conglomerate. Although it has not been confirmed, it seems likely that Foxx will be playing Willie Gary in this film.

Deadline describes the movie as a “two-handed drama,” and says that Foxx will star “opposite a legendary role currently being cast.” I’m curious to see if that “legendary role” ends up being for the rival lawyer in this case, or for the part of O’Keefe, because that will likely shape the type of movie this could become: a no-holds-barred courtroom blowout, or a more somber drama between an aggrieved man and his lawyer.

Maggie Betts wrote and directed Novitiate, a 2017 period drama about a nun grappling with her faith, the church, sexual repression, and more. The director won a Breakthrough Director special jury prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and The Burial will be her follow-up feature.

Foxx lends his voice to the lead character in Pixar’s upcoming Soul, and will be somehow be reprising his role as the supervillain Electro in Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 3, which is currently filming.
